A thug is an ever so masculine dude who usually fit the urban hip/hop stereotypes. Dew Rags, Timz, Wife beaters, Sweats, Tattoos and and knows how to lay the pipe good and hard. This is what a thug is!
In olden times a thug was a criminal or no good Hoodlum man or boy. Some one who was in the wrong crowd or at least hung out with them!

The original definition of the word thug comes from the hindi word thugee which was a theif/killer in India (forget what the Indiana Jones movie says). This was adopted by the English as someone who stole/murdered; basically a petty criminal.

The definition you're probably looking for is someone who likes to relate to the Hardcore Rap scene. During the beginning of what is considered Hardcore Rap/Hip Hop/Gangsta' Rap, artists who were formally in street gangs and prisons would call themselves "thugz". This went down through the ages transforming and creating new slang terms such as O.G or Original Gangsta'. Gangster as you know is another word for someone who relates to the Rap scene.

a thug is someone (male usually) who uses his strength and willingness to use violence in a threatening manner to get what he wants. Sort of like a grown up bully. Hired thugs are ppl you pay to beat others up for you (as against bodyguards who you hire to protect you).
