As someone who had grown up in a sunny country I think I have a very good method for getting the best tan with least complications:

Wear a sunblock lotion with an SPF that is suitable for your skin type (You'll find charts associating SPF and skin type in most retailers). Avoid exposure to the sun during the hotter hours (between 12-4) and follow a gradual sun exposure program:

The skin is less sensitive at the feet and more sensitive at the top. So start by gradually exposing your skin to the sun starting from the feet and moving upwards for increasing amount of time each day. Eg. expose your feet for 30min one day. Next day expose your legs for 30 min and your feet for one hour and so on and so forth.

Use and aftersun lotion when leaving the sun, helps you feel refreshed and helps your skin cope.

If you get burned, still apply sunblock even in the shade or at night. I once applied sunblock to someone who had been burned and this turned into a tan overnight.

Protect exposed skin with a sunscreen SPF 45, especially your face and neck. Protective clothing and a shade umbrella when you are sitting outside.

Try TimeWise® Day Solution Sunscreen SPF 25. It helps prevent lines and discoloration caused by UVA/UVB rays before they occur. TimeWise® Night Solution helps to repair any damage already done. You could also use TimeWise® Age-Fighting Moisturizer Sunscreen SPF 15 (oil-free, light weight) and then a foundation to protect against damaging elements in the environment.
