no, it's not. there's a cross over circuit. when u r using the laptop with the charger ON. if the battery is full, then it uses the charger power.
i have seen some brands use the battery power and then the battery going low, it will charge continuesly and use the battery power with charging.
but u can periodically discharge the battery full and charge it in full to increase your battery life.

Quoting from NYTimes' Article (who quotes from some CNET.com's Editor):
if you use only wall current to run the device, you should remove the laptop’s battery to prevent it from being constantly charged and becoming overheated
you should remove the battery when using an external plug due to overheating. (heat is no 1 enemy for battery, avoid high heat at all). [Note: if suddenly the external power goes a blackout, you'll lose your unsaved works without a battery as power backup. ]
To Tom K: Plugging the laptop while not being used, although it is OK for a _Lithium Battery_ (since a lithium has some kind of limiter that closes itself when the battery is full) it is never recommended either, since there is a concern that some things may malfunction, from the AC plug or the laptop or the battery.
and surprisingly, a battery last longer the more it used, so use it as often as possible.
and although most battery types last longer if fully discharged every several uses, this kind of doing actually harms a lithium battery, which is used on most today's laptop, handphone, and any mobile device. [FOR LITHIUM ONLY, avoid fully discharging _lithium_ batteries]

Well apart from wasting energy when you are NOT using the laptop (by keeping your charger plugged in when you switch off the laptop). I personally have not noticed any problems for 2 years now.
I do however periodically let my battery fully discharge and fully charge again.

You should go ahead and plug in the laptop sometimes. The less you have to actually use the battery as a standby, the better.

No it will charge at 10-20% less speed. Whichever game you play it uses resources and hence your battery power will get lower.
