The Angels were an expansion team in 1961 going by the name "Los Angeles Angels", named after the longtime Pacific Coast League team of that name. They played their first season at L.A.'s Wrigley Field (which had been the home of the PCL Angels) and shared Dodger Stadium from 1962-1965. Owner Gene Autry changed the name to the California Angels in 1965 in anticipation of their move to Anaheim in 1966.

This L.A. Angels of Anaheim was just started, and it was to try to cash in on being in the "LA" market. The new owner thought he would sell more this way. They have NEVER been L.A. Angels prior to this stupid idea. So California Angels.
