They were called Allegheny (it's unclear whether the name was just "Allegheny" or "the Pittsburgh Alleghenies") from 1882-90. In 1890, they were known as the Pittsburgh Innocents, though possibly only informally.

Alleghanys, The Pirates was taken from the "nickname" they were given for "Pirating" players. They were buying players away from other teams.
