The official name of the original AL team in Washington (who moved to Minnesota in 1961) was the Nationals, though they'd been popularly but unofficially called the Senators for decades. The second AL team in Washington, who were an expansion team in 1961 and moved to Texas in 1972, were officially named the Senators during their entire existence.

Previous Washington teams had been known as the Blue Legs (National Associations, 1873 and '75), the Statesmen (American Association, 1884), the Nationals (Union Association, 1884) and the Senators (AA, 1891; NL, 1892-99).

They never became defunct in the American League, they just became the Texas Rangers.

There was an old Senators franchise in the NL once known as the Senators, and they were previously known as the Statesmen.

On some old baseball cards they were called the Nationals. See Harmon Killebrew's rookie card.
