It may just be that they have to.. I know I take my college homework with me when i go back home to visit. Being the procastinator that i am, I never finish it at home so I HAVE to do it on the plane so when i get back it will be done and I can hand in the next day. I have a 8 hour flight so I can do a lot in that amount of time!

Because it usually gets very boring on the plane, so if you can work or study there, it lets you use your time at either end of the flight for something more fun!
