Sneezing is a reflex response that expels an irritant from the nose. It involves many muscles in the face, throat and chest. The sneeze reflex involves the muscles of the face that close the eyes as well. For this reason, is not possible to voluntarily keep our eyes open when we sneeze.

It's completely UNTRUE that we close our eyes to stop our eyeballs coming out. It's an old wives tail.

There actually isn't any medical reason why we do it, it's just a reflex the same as your leg jerking when you hit the right nerve.

There are a lot of people who CAN and DO sneeze with their eyes open, and nothing much happens.

So it's just a reflex action, nothing more.

It's physically impossible to keep them open when you sneeze, possibly because of the force a sneeze comes out at. I heard it comes out at something like 200 miles per hour.

Because the sneeze is the second most satisfying thing you can do, and man oh man, it's so embarrassing to enjoy yourself like that out in public, so we close our eyes.
