Here's the thing the politicians have very little sway with oil co. Many of them are in a way on their payroll. Lobbyist from energy spend lotsa money on politicians.. Politicos used to write their own laws now enrgy writes the laws for them. The question is what can you do. In the 70's when the oil companys did this same thing (there was no actual shortage then either they were pumping excess oil down mine shafts) people car pooled, drove slower, did not drive their gas guzzlers everywhere they went and if you did do that you caught hell from your friends. I live in TX and every other vehicle on the road is a pick up no says a thing. You should be contacting your elected officials every time you get a chance and voicing your opinion. While your at it tell um you want them to support the Internet neutrality act supported cuz they do not like all this free speach and will make communication like this difficult if they can.

What can a politician do? Just because they receive a certain number of votes, it does not mean that they suddenly become endowed with divine powers.
Gasoline (or petrol, if that's your cup of tea) prices are not set by any individuals. They are set by the market and depend on a variety of factors like current supply and demand and expected future supplies. If there is anything that looks like it might threaten future supplies, like a war in the Middle East, or a strike in Venezuela, then prices rise. Or even in the US, when spring comes the refineries have to switch to a government-mandated summer blend, which causes a supply disruption, which causes a seasonal rise in prices.

They aren't sitting pretty at all: wars are maintaining oil price high. Just guess who are the ones who are making a fortune from wars!!
