He was swimming over a stingray. The animal felt threatened for some reason (perhaps another animal) and so it realeased its barb under the rib cage into the heart. He was at least concious enough to get the barb out but by the time he got to the hosp it was too late.
Sting Rays can be painful but are hardly ever poisonous. This one was not poiosnous either. It just hit him in the heart.
I feel so horrible for his family.

Eight thousand miles from the remote reef where Irwin was harpooned in the heart by the serrated spine of a stingray while filming a new documentary, many of Britain's 400,000 Australians were woken by text messages from loved ones at home bearing the news. Some descended on the themed bars beloved by their countrymen to raise a cold VB in tribute. At the Walkabout in Covent Garden, manager Megan Sawyers tied a black armband fashioned from a bin bag around the front leg of the large plastic croc lying on a bed of fake corrugated iron behind the bar. "It should be a public holiday," she says. Another man brandishes an inflatable crocodile outside.

Steve Irwin was stunk by a sting ray in his chest. The stinger went up through him and it was reported on the news today that there is video footage of him getting stung and pulling it back out of his chest. The video footage is going to the coroner for the investigation. I am sure the family will not want this footage to get out.

In trying to look at the positive side of this tragedy you never know what this poor man was thinking when he was barbed so quickly. One can only imagine.
You almost have to think he KNEW he was a gonner even when pulling out this serrated edged barb from his heart. What an awful feeling that must have been to be in the prime of your life knowing that it was ending very soon. My feelings go out to his family and all of the fans worldwide. He will be greatly missed.
I have never seen someone so EXHUBERANT about their work. He is truly a role model for those people who exist as automatons in jobs they can't stand.
In hoping to get a "positive" side of this...maybe he didn't go thru much pain and maybe said to himself...
Crikey...I got hit by a Spikey
Sad indeed. The world needed more people like him who helped us deal with day to day BS in our lives by making the evening or weekend just a little more interesting and joyful.
Rest in peace! But knowing your energy you're probably stirring things up in the afterlife!

He was scuba diving, and his belly was flat against the floor as he was filming for the next series of crocodile hunter, when a stingray's spike thing went straight through his chest into his heart, and managed to pull it out before he died. He is believed to only be the 4th person killed by a stingray.

Steve was diving in the great barrier reef filming a TV show called "ocean's deadliest", when he swan too close to a stingray, who thought that we was being trapped by the camera and the TV star. the stingray was defending himself and had pierced his poisonous stinger through his heart, Steve had pulled the stinger out of his chest, but moments later he was gone. this was all filmed, the police have the tape for evidence but will not be showing it to the public yet.

he was swimming near a reef and was attacked by a stingray... he got the spikey end of the tail right through the heart! there is one chance in a million to get attacked by a stingray cause they are so harmless, and there is another chance in a million to get hit exactly in the heart, but thats how it happened!
