Because when it started out it fulfilled two main requirements. Firstly, it provided better results than the other search engines at the time, so users found pages that were useful to them, resulting in a good user experience. Secondly, it had a beautifully clean user interface, in marked contrast to other search engines which tended to have become portal pages, which again made it easy to use for the user.
Over time since then, other search engines have improved, and there's not much to choose nowadays between Google and Yahoo! or MSN for instance. However, people are now used to using Google, and there is an inertia effect that stops people changing, unless someone comes up with a huge improvement that affords a great advantage to the user for switching.

Google is the most succesiful search engine because of the following reasons:
It has a very low relative error which approaches zero and very accurate
It is faster.
Google appears still to have the largest database of Web pages, including many other types of Web documents (e.g., PDFs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint documents). Despite the presence of many advertisements and considerable clutter from blog sites and newsgroups, Google's makes pages worth looking at rise near the top of search results.
Google is not carried away with its past achievements.Google still working hard to improve its search engine.Every day you log in to google, they will be an improvement, a totally or slightly improved thing.
Google has a long product range as compared to yahoo.For instance google talk, Gmail,G talk .G mobile , Google earth etc.Its capturing everyone's interest at once.
Google continues to attract the best software engineers and the brightest students , we all know what happens when experts combine their forces together.
Besides that at any point in human evolution there has to be a unique product and google is one of a kind.There is nothing we can take away from it.
Well on the negative side especially on email.Google [Gmail]can't beat Yahoo Beta.Hats of to Yahoo for coming with such a unique product.Yahoo has the capabilities of beating google but then it ignored other parts of the worlD such as Africa.google is penetrating every where.
It can be accessible much faster and easier as compared with other serach engines such as MSN.

I like Google, because it a search Engine as Yahoo is a portal.

I started finding google useful a few years ago as it was so simple to use. The result were also better in most cases.
They seem to have some theoretical foundation for their ranking with the page-rank mechanism. So a page is more important if more sites are linking to it.....
However the world might change. With increased commercialisation the use of google might decrease.

I don't know - I still use Yahoo! but most everybody else I know seems to use Google, although from what I see, it appears to throw up the same results as Yahoo!. Quite interested to see the answers to this one......

google is successful because so many people use it all over the world and it is easy to use and easy to log on to as well

because its a no whistles and bells search engine, you don't have to navigate through flash adverts and pop ups.
