I would just like to add, the fact that I am not taking my husbands name is no reflection on my feelings for him and our marriage. Also I do not know whether I want children, or even if we can have them , but I know one thing for sure I am my husband's wife and that is all that matters. Thank you to everyone who has responded positively.

No. You only need to inform people if you are changing your name. I have spent the last 3 months doing this, so you are getting off easy by keeping it the same!!!!!

No, but there is a problem. Most states do not list on birth certificates whether a child's parents are married, so when the names are different, there is a presumption of illegitimacy. With this they estimate how much child support is owed in their state to children. You might consider demanding that the birth certificate list you as being married, if that is important to you, but they may refuse. Laws intended to correct this problem have been blocked by groups representing single mothers who say it would stigmatize them, and violate their privacy rights.

Government agencies would need to know you are married, in case it effects family benefits etc. Births, Deaths and Marriage Registrations need to be informed too but that might be covered at the ceremony?

i wonder how commited you are to this relationship toward building a family if your own name is needed to feel like you have an identity ... i will be surpried if you are still married to this man after 5 years, in 40 years, only one couple i know who did that is still married ...all the rest were divorced within 5 years or less
