A man with a pacemaker causes some concerns with potential employers. First, have a discussion with your doctor about what he feels you are able to do as far as work is concerned. After finding a potential employer, call their human resources department and explain your condition to them, along with your doctor's prognosis of the type of work you can do. Ask them if the job you are applying for has any restrictions to it as far as medical, then go apply for the job. If H R gets involved, usually the hiring personell employee knows you have been pre-cleared to work.

They have to say the are EOE in order to comply with the labor laws.

However sometimes personality is more of a decision factor than qualifications. I won't hire a qualified arrogant jerk because I don't want to work with that person no matter how skilled they are. I'd rather hire someone who is easier to work with even though they may need more training. At least I know they will appreciate the work and the company. And not cause problems with other co-workers.

Well it is because what you think as qualified may not be what I think of as qualified. For example my boss wanted to hire someone with 10 years in IT and I wanted to hire someone with 5 years. Is the 10 year person more qualified? Not really. In IT things you learned more than 5 years ago are not relevant today. Also the 10 year person hadn't kept his skills current and I didn't think he would fit in with my staff. In the end we hired the 5 year person.

The attitude of the person has a lot to do with it as well. I've interviewed some pretty arrogant people and people who just had a bad attitude. I don't want someone like that in my department and I don't want to subject my staff to the stress of working with someone who doesn't fit in.

I know this isn't the answer you want but tough it's the truth.

The law says employers must be EOE, but that does not change peoples attitudes. EOE abuses must be proven. This is hard to do if one can not afford a lawyer.

Over qualification could mean a higher salary that they cant afford or they feel maybe you will get bored with the position and look for another job while they prefer someone they can train a bit and may stay longer. There are many many reasons dont take it personally. Put your resume out to 10 you may only get one response...so make sure you put out lots of resumes and dont limit yourself to looking into one particular job. Try everything, everywhere.
Good luck to you.

It's not always about qualifications, it's about fitting in with the company. Someone may be the best in the field but if the have a crappy personality, it may bring down productivity in others.
