I don't think he was careless but it is true to say that he took risks. But then... who doesn't take risks. Maybe in Steve's case he took more risks than most but to live life to the full often involves taking risks.

He was a professional and had spent his entire life around dangerous animals. If anyone knew the potential dangers and the correct ways to handle such animals it was Steve Irwin.

It's ironic that the animal that killed him is by and large a safe animal, the only other case of a person being killed by a stingray in Australia happened over 60 years ago... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5311298.stm

In answer to Anna G's question about the video tape - it's in the hands of the Queensland Police... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5314918.stm

Only a few weeks ago I was 'wrestling' crocodiles and although I was with professional croc handlers, there was of course a risk. It's a risk I'd gladly take again and again if the opportunity were to present itself.

tackling risky wild animals did not value steve irwin his existence, he had rather some admire for them and nevertheless he appeared reckless, he constantly ensured the two him and his filmcrew have been secure. steve irwin died in a freak twist of fate with a stringray which at the instant are not basically very placid animals (i've got swam with them myself) yet in addition their barbs at the instant are not very threatening, in simple terms like a severe bee-sting. it became in simple terms the milion to a minimum of one risk that it stung him so on the brink of his heart or maybe then it became the puncture wound not the creatures organic poison defence that killed him. on a private word steve irwin additionally did extra for the conservation of australian organic worldwide than everybody else, is that not reason sufficient?

Well, do you think that if a police officer was caught in the line of fire and killed, was careless? Probably not. The point is, he was trained to handle wild animals and he made it his life. The statistics of stingray barbs are so profound, it just leads me to believe, that he was called Up to do another service. No matter where you are or what you're doing, if your time is up, it's up, that's it! God bless his soul.

To some extent yes, but then again its human nature to court danger if one keeps getting away with it. So I can also understand his state of mind, he had taken so many risks with such few mishaps that his confidence was at an all time high, many people have taken a fall in circumstances like this, unfortunately he paid for it with his life.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

No, although he may have seemed like a bit of a daredevil, he was actually a professional animal handler whose own father was also in the business of animal study and handling. Even though he seemed to take chances, he was actually an expert in his field.

S. Irwin said so himself that whenever he got hurt- it was his fault.
He wanted to be remembered as passionate and enthusiastic..
and he was- wasn't he?.... all the way to the end. Another brilliant person taken at such young age. May he rest in peace.

What a callous question. The man is dead from a freak accident. His family is devastated. Give him some respect.

No, I think he was about as cautious as any human being can be. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as 100%, and as a result this tragedy occurred. He will be missed. RIP Steve.
