They are not so overcrowded, for one. They don't listen to the kind of hysterical media the US Americans do. Most of them can read and write and are able to read decent newspapers without a dictionary. They don't vote in gouvernments a lot that try to exploit people's fear to secure their power. They want to know what's going on in the world ouside their country. Being a racist bigot is not being encouraged but frowned upon... I could go on and on and on.

I'm not sure how you are defining 'relaxed' - it is a very inexact word to use to describe a country. Canada is certainly more liberal when it comes to things like gay rights and drugs, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. Canada is certainly more politically-correct than America, which has a greater tradition of freedom of speech - this is a point in favour of America being more 'relaxed'. Canada is not as anxious as America vis-a-vis security as it is not as great a target, though it is still a target. Were there to be a terrorist attack in Canada, I would hope the people would not allow themselves to be duped into attacking a country which had nothing to do with it (like Iraq).

I have lived in both countries and didn't find the Canadians as a society to be more relaxed. Although they typically work shorter hours than those in the US, and are probably less money-motivated, they have their own unique set of problems. For one, they consider Canada to be a "mosaic" rather than a "melting pot". What that means is that immigrants to Canada from other countires keep their bad habits and never conform to their adopted society. For example, some continue to participate in honor killings and female circumcision. As a result many people live in ghettos of their own making. It may seem relaxed to an outsider but it ain't.

We are more relaxed because we are not hated around the world. Why do you think so many Americans try and pass themselves off as Canadians when traveling. We are a land of people who think before we speak or act. We are more of a tossed salad as apposed to being a melting pot. We are not mostly immigrants contrary to what people think. We put health care, education and economics before talking war and trash. We possess just as much patriotism as anyone else...but we do not ram it down any ones throat and above all we have the best beer and ice wine happening.

There is no power that does not also, by virtue of its power, have an agenda. And, sadly, the more power the more pronounced the agenda(s). Stay cool!
