Depends on how much your parents spoiled you but in my personal experience... definitely! Most of the really self centred and selfish people I have known (where Ive known their parentage) have been only children.

I don't agree. I'm an only child; I've rarely been self-indulgent, and I've never been self-centered. In fact, when I was in gradeschool, I allowed the other students to run over me so much that my teachers developed a habit of making me play near their desk so that whatever I was amusing myself with wouldn't be taken away. I was never greedy with things, either.

However, only children do tend to be more shy (especially if their parent(s) didn't socialise them often), more intelligent, and more often the loner type.

Not in my case. I'm the oldest and my younger brother is the self-indulgent one. I actually had to learn in my 40s to stop putting everyone else's needs ahead of my own. I didn't want to believe that it's possible to be too unselfish, but it is.

Generally the youngest/ only child is the self -centred/ self indulgent one, the eldest child is usually a carer and they frequently go into jobs such as nursing/ teaching etc.

yes , only children usually tend me more selfish and self centered,
because for atleast 15-20 years of their lives, beith the onlykid , they get special treatment from their parents, and they do not have this "caring and sharing" attitude, since they never had any sisters or brothers to share and care about, when they grwo up and go out in the world, they do not seem to care about anyone, and are close to the thought of sharing anything with other be it their privacy or girl/boy friend.hence they become possessive!

as far as being the oldest child is concerned, i m the eldest in my family and i dont think any eldest child can be self centered, coz they have to take care of their younger ones and have to responsible of their deeds when the mums and dads are not around!
although they become indulgent in their own way, they do not treat the younger kids as their equals, they always treat them as younger ones; so they do not tend to share their own problems with them, because they do not feel that they are mature anuf to handle the elder ppls' problems! hence they might become self indulgent!

I'm an only child and can honestly say I've had the most miserable life I can describe - no one there for you.

yes but it still all depends on how the parents handle things when raising them but I've seen examples of this in both
