Ur computer could be slow for various reasons. Here a couple of the reasons and your possible responses to these reasons;
1. It might be under virus, Trojan, ad-ware or spy-ware attack. You can install an anti-virus (Mcafee, Norton or Panda will do). Then run a system scan on all you storage media (hard disks, floppy etc)
2. The hard disk might be low on space. This will make the system a lot slower. You can try to delete files that you no longer use (make sure you delete them from the recycle bin as well, in order to completely delete them from your system). Also, you should uninstall applications that you no longer need or use. You can do this from the Control panel, Add or Remove Programs. It shows you a list of applications currently installed. Select the application and click on the remove button to uninstall those that you don't use any longer
3. You can try to use system diagnostic tools such as Disk De-fragment and Disk Cleanup (Start Menu - Programs - Accessories - System Tools) to bring order to your drives.
4. You can use disk checking to make sure of the integrity of your hard disc (My computer - Right click on the hard disk - Properties - On the tools tab - Check now button.
5. If all else fails, you might try to upgrade the memory (RAM) by buying an additional RAM chip for your computer.

First of all it depends on the PC configuration of yours.
Try deleting all the tmp files from TEMP directory and all the temp internet files too. uninstall all the unwanted softwares and remove all the programs from startup (you can use msconfig for this). make sure you have only sound and time shown on your task bar.
try moving files from the desktop and My Documents and keep it on any other drive. make C: drive having more space.
Increase the virtual memory of you PC.
In windows 2000 and XP, this option is available by right clicking My Computer>Properties and go to Advanced Tab. Select Performance options and increase the virtual memory size there.
restart the PC and run a through Scandisk and defrag.
This should help you out

The most effective way to speed up your computer is to increase your memory capacity and speed. (If your motherboard can support higher capacity and speed) Also getting a SATA drive would help tremendously. Other things such as defragmenting drive and deleting old files/trash would help a little but not to the extend that you can FEEL the change.

if u wanna speed up your internet :
1. delete all cookies and offline files...that will speed up ur internet a little but that is almost negligible...
if u wanna speed up ur computer :
1. defragment all ur drive (dont worry this wont delete any of ur data) just go to programs > accesories > disk defragmenter
2. you can try deleting some unused software that you may have accidently downloaded....these are mostly adwares and sometimes spyware also and these are responsible for slowing down your pc
i hope that helps you.... :-)

If you load more software your PC speed goes down,
First remove the unwanted things.
Run an anti virus as sometimes it happens due to virus.
Else
the easy solution is to increase your Ram. Get a 1GB Ram and than see the difference.
ACNT.com is the on line store where you can get it for cheap prices.

get a newer computer
or if u can't afford it, delete useless stuff that u don't need any more or if u don't have useless stuff, put some files on a CD or USB
u can also go to start, accesories, defragment, it will compress the files and provide more space ;)
the second suggestion is better, right? the first is my stupid friend's
P.S. my stupid friend also suggests scanning for a virus, it might help but not that much :p

you could (hardware):
* add memory to 1GB or more
* upgrade your processor
* upgrade your motherboard
* upgrade your vga card
* upgrade your harddrive
* the brutal "just throw your computer and buy a new hi-tech one"
you could (software):
* get your self tweaking software. try to found one on the internet. tweaking XP is a good one.
