Sorry dude but the fact is it's Bob.
Dylan wrote this for the film Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid. Dylan was in the movie.
the best version however or may be the most familiar one for me is GNR's.

Nope...written and performed by Bob Dylan for the soundtrack of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (not sure of the date, but early to mid-'70s)...Peter Tosh's version is great, yes, but it's a Dylan song (a testament to how great a songwriter Dylan is is how many great, if not superior, cover versions of his songs there are)

In 1973 Bob Dylan appeared in director Sam Peckinpah's film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and contributed to the soundtrack, including “Knockin' on Heaven's Door.”

"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" was indeed written by Bob Dylan for the movie "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid"(1973).
It first appeared in the soundtrack of the movie. Bob Dylan actually appeared in the movie playing a guy named "Alias".

Dylan definitely wrote it, Dylan can just flat out write! I also like Dylan's version the best myself. Hate the Use Your Illusions Gn'R version. I liked the live video of Gn'R doing it though, that was pretty good. The Clapton and Tosh versions are good too.

Bob Dylan is definitely the 1 who composed and performed it. It was made more famous when other artisits, including Peter Tosh and Guns N' Roses, covered it.

It doesn't matter who you think sounds original, Bob Dylan is the original, singer and writer, period.
