It aims for an office situation where I would like to share a network folder for about 5 staffs. I would not want them access to the programs or access to other part of the server. So PCanywhere would not be suitable

They need read access to one folder only. They need to be authenticated If possible before they could access this folder via the web.

If the server has an internet IP address (external) then configure routing and remote access to allow your users to connect via a VPN/tunnel. In each users (username/password) settings, set it to allow them to connect via remote access.
Then, just create a shared folder on the server and allow specific users to access it.
If the Server is connected to the internet via a router then you will have to setup port forwarding for VPN/Tunnel on the router to forward the connections to the server.
Each user then just have to setup a VPN/tunnel connection from there home PC to your server or routers IP address.
Depending on TCP/IP configs and operating systems each user may have to explicitly map the shared drive rather than accessing it using network neighbourhood.
