This is the correct answer..........
When you use Excel you open a .xls file and it is in the inner frame of the program window. If you then open another .xls file it will cover the first file as you have found. To see both the files at the same time, go to near the top right of the spreadsheet you have open and click on the middle button on the file, not the minimise or the close but the one in the middle. This will shrink the file down from full size and enable you to see the other file you have open. You can open many files this way and arrange them by dragging them around.

I'm not sure what can be gained by it, as it means running an additional procedure of Excel, but here goes:
If it is a temporary thing:
Go to Start > Run
Type: excel.exe "C:\location\filename.xls"
Press OK.
If it is a file you regularly want to be opened, create a shortcut to Excel with the filename as argument.

i thought they were open in individual windows. You can restore the window down then click on a second one and restore that down so you can view both. You can also go to Window>> compare side by side, there is also an option for new window as well.
Press F1 and type in a relative word

Open the file from the folder you found it in after clicking on my documents on the desktop, not in the excel program.
