There are 2 basic premises behind uni-sex education. One is that there are differences between male and female brains which can lead to differences in learning style. By educating the sexes in separate classes or separate schools, instruction can be geared toward the learning styles that best suit each gender. The other big issue is the distraction factor. Boys and girls, especially at puberty and beyond, naturally spend a lot of time trying to get the attention of the opposite sex. When there is no one around to show off for, the focus can more easily be maintained on education.
While it is true that there are some uni-sex schools that have documented higher student achievement, I would have to say that they are not for everyone. My daughter is a very bright student, and she gained a lot by the competition with the boys. While it is true that girls tend to learn in a more cooperative structure and boys often thrive on competition, my daughter definitely pushed herself to high achievement because she didn't want to let the smartest boys out-do her.
So in education, as in all aspects of life, there is no one solution that is right for everyone.

Seen mixed results in journals on conclusion you stated. Did not study this in detail, but have seen it stated that overall there is not that much of a difference, and turf protecting get hinted at as true origination of numbers.
Since males and female need to cope with distractions each presents their whole lives, than this seems poor reason for uni-sex schools. Personally think it is marking tool used by some school to justify cost they charge. Answer on learning styles seems best. Even thou Harvard Dean got bounced in days for hinting such a thing exists.

Well uni sex schools may get very very good results but the point is results is'nt education after all . To know how to behave , interact with the opposite sex is what makes your life and so being in a unisex school may not give you distractions , but it does help .

They tend to be private and thus attract students from more educated / wealthier backgrounds. This ordinarily results in better academic scores, although the detriment of social skills is a frequently argued counterpoint to this.
