Incredible ego, fearlessness, need for fame, avarice, interest in zoology, philanthropy, desire to educate, or pure stupidity. You choose. The fact is whatever the reason he did enormous good for the understanding and protection of animals normally considered dangerous and undesirable. He was an amazing ambassador.

Isn't it ironic that urban legend had him down as eaten by a crocodile several years ago? And yet when he died it was doing something that hardly anyone had ever been injured doing. Even kids swim with stingrays on holiday.

tackling dangerous wild animals didn't cost steve irwin his life, he had a lot of respect for them and though he looked reckless, he always ensured both him and his filmcrew were safe. steve irwin died in a freak accident with a stringray which are not only very placid animals (i've swam with them myself) but also their barbs are not very threatening, just like a severe bee-sting. it was just the milion to one chance that it stung him so close to his heart and even then it was the puncture wound not the creatures natural poison defence that killed him. on a personal note steve irwin also did more for the conservation of australian wildlife than anyone else, is that not reason enough?

He didn't. None of the animals he tackled cost him his life. It was one that he wasn't tackling that killed him. It was a freak accident and it didn't happen to him because he was being an @$$.
He tackled dangerous animals because he knew what he was doing. You don't think he started out at 16yrs old just harassing crocs do you? No, he learnt how to approach animals over a long period of time and he was obviously good at it because NONE of the animals he messed with EVER killed him!

Someone convinced Steve to do a documentary categorizing stingrays--the cuddliest and most gentle of marine creatures, (except for the manatee) --they are actually friendlier than dolphins--and one suddenly killed him? I would love to know who came up with the idea and I would love to see the unedited video. I want to create enough of a buzz so that they are forced to show the video. I am not buying their story without the proof.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

Steve Irwin was doing something which I have done - something comparitively safe which went wrong.
