The stingray has poisonous barbs, so first they poison you then as the barb is ripped out it tears the flesh. If this hits the heart of a major artery as in the Steve Irwin case you then lose a lot of blood quick and this will kill you A strike anywhere else although pain full will not always kill.

Stingrays are generally placid creatures so unless they felt intimidated they would not attack.
The amount of venom in a stingray's barb is generally not fatal to a human and can be treated by immersing the wound in hot water for thirty minutes to an hour.
There have only been three documented cases of death caused by a stingray with Steve Irwin's being the third

The Stingray is a placid creature . As a self defence mechanism , they are armed with a venomous barb in their tail . if cornered the Stingray will twist ,and lash out with its tail , stabbing any predators with its barb .
There are three recorded deaths that have been caused by stingrays in Austalia .
They live in the shallows at every populated beach in Austalia .taking this into account , i hardly think they are a significant threat to Humans .
Steves death was a tragic and unfortunate accident . he would be the first to agree . We enter the domain of sea creatures , when we are mamals , this is their world . If the stingray had of been a Taipan , Steve would still be saying . " Crikey I must of scared the **** out of that poor bloody Stingray . " Its not his fault , leave him alone .
I love you Steve . Rip .

Thier barbs are extremely toxic. And I have to add that they usually don't. Steve Irwin was the only the third recorded death of a stingray.

A stingrays tail has many sharp spines on it which each have poisonous barbs on it that are there to protect from predators. If a stingray feels threatened, is suprised, or frightened, it will lash out with this ultra-venomous tail.

string rays have a barb at the end of their tail, which they pierce to the enemy if they feel threatened.
this barb is venomous and can poison the enemy.
if the stingray barb hits in the chest, it pierces the heart, so it kills the person as he gets cardiac arrest.
so far only 2 people have ever been reported to have died of this, including steven irwin yesterday

They generally don't unless you have frightened them , but they have a barb at the end of the tail. I have been swimming with stingrays a lot and I have found them to be very friendly, they like the bubbles that come from the breathing apparatus, also they like to be tickled! The mad austrailian guy must have spooked it!

i think there has only been 4 or 5 fatal attacks by stingrays.. they would attack if they thought they were being threatened , it was a defensive move, some things you just don't want to mess with
