I have checked the bios and usb is ENABLED.When I plug the drive in any of the usb ports ,I get the "usb device not recognised"balloon.
The flash drive works perfectly in any other computer?

The drive is a "sony micro vault" and does not need any drivers other than windows xp default?

Click on the START button, then ALL PROGRAMS, then go to ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, then COMPUTER MANAGEMENT. This will open the Computer Management Console.
Look on the left hand side and find DISK MANAGEMENT, click on it and you should see something along the lines of DISKxx, labelled as a removeable disk., right click on this and select CHANGE DRIVE LETTERS & PATH, assign it a drive letter you are NOT already using, it will now appear everytime you plug your flash drive in.
The other problem could be you have are not making a proper connection when you plus the flash drive in. I have a shi**y Compaq presario with a curved front bezel, if I don't use a USB extension cable, NONE of my usb devices can be seen when I use the forward mounted USB slot... bummer!

I had a similar problem with an Exigo USB Flash Drive. It says that no driver is required, windows XP has a driver for it already. When I plugged it in, windows detected it and went through all the 'new hardware detected' procedure, but couldn't work out what it was. I did this loads of times and eventually it detected 'new USB device', then 'Exigo Flash Drive'. I've no idea why it took loads of attempts and didn't work first time.
Since then, it has detected it straight away every time I plug it in. I found one thing that helped when I first got it to work was to unplug the drive and wait several minutes for windows to work out that the USB socket has no device in it, then plug it back in.

in order to diagnose the problem you need to provide a few more details about what happens when you plug in the flash drive. does a balloon pop up and say "new hardware detected" if not look at the bottom right of your screen and see if rectangle and green arrow are there. if so go to control panel administrative tools then computer management and then disk drives and see if you can see it being detected. if it is it will need to be formatted. you can do that by clicking on the drive and selecting new a partition an following the options.
If your drive is not recognized at all try different USB sockets , sometimes the front ones are not wired up. Also try the key in a different computer and see if it is being recognized.
I wish you luck

I recommend plugging in the drive. Go to control panel and add new hardware. Since it is usb, it may detect it automatically. You may have to select from a list for your device. Sometimes it is not on the list, like if you have a scanner it only lists cameras. Did your device come with a cd to install drivers. Usually not needed for Windows xp. Try having it plugged in and reboot. This may detect it as well. Hope this stuff helps.

Only one possibility. Check the BOIS setup. See if USB ports are Enable. Normaly if the device is in good shape XP Pro will recognize it automaticaly. Check the drive on another PC first.

How old is your flash drive? It is just possible that it is faulty. Have you tried it in a different machine?
Usually flash drives are automatically recognised by Windows XP without the need for additional drivers.

There is an update from Microsoft on USB/Flash Drive. Go to Services and download the file.

Try running the "Add hardware" option on the control panel, when it prompts you for the flash drive, just indicate the place where the drivers are. If you don't have the drivers download them from the manufacturer website.
Good Luck

Mine in the office kept doing that we shut down all the computers and did a resart and suddenly it worked- who knows why - these things have a mind of their own.
We had tried the sensible look for hardware and stuff - that didn't work
