String theory supposes that the smallest things in the universe are vibrating strings. Like a violin string vibrates differently to make different notes these string vibrate to create base particles, photons, electrons and so on. The harder they vibrate the more energy so it explains why particles have such differing characteristics. Also they beleive that the strings vibrate in more dimensions than our three, that there are dimensions of movement so small only a string can enter it.

It can be a hard thing to grasp but don't fall into the trap of asking what part of a string is or how long they are. They are the smallest thing in the universe so they can't be measured by anything other than their size, there cannot be less than one string because there is nothing smaller to "cut" it.

As far as I can tell it's based on a one dimensional model which treats particles as strings which vibrate at varying frequencies. String theory implies anywhere up to 26 dimensions. Sorry, I can't comment on the mathematics.
