Despite the fact that the appendix often being seen as completely useless this isn't really the case. The appendix contains lymphoid tissue and thus serve a function for the immune system - it helps detect any bad bacteria we might have.

The reason in may be seen as a vestigal organ (a reminant of a previously useful organ) is that in herbivorous animals it serves a function for digestion. For example Koalas have a very long appendix that helps them digests leaves (I assume it does this by containing useful bacteria that can digest cellulose). Our ancestors from millions of years ago were herbivorous our appendix may have been larger before we turned to a more omnivorous life style.

appendix was a useful organ in our ancestors and played a vital role in digesting the food. But because of the change in diet and other causes, it doesn't play any role in the function of our body. So it called a residue part of the body. I got my appendix removed when I was 9 years and I am perfectly fine, that is functioning of my body is normal.
