I notice a lot of caucasian girls like tanning but tan = skin damage.

Not photoshopped, obviously, and both are wearing make-up!

Why are people obsessed with tan?

Sun exposure is good. We can't avoid sun exposure but purposely laying out or using UV beds ... that's what really hastens wrinkle formation and I just find it ironic that Western society values youth so much (as evidence with plastic surgery and cosmetic fillers, like botox), and yet, most people purposely cause themselves to premature age because of too much sun, which is the 80% cause of skin aging.

Anyway, Fred the dog, Tan = Sun Damage and I never said tanning kills ...

I agree, it's crazy. The reason people tan is because a brown pigment called melanin is the body's natural defence against sun damage. This is related to the skin cancer melanoma. Apparently skin cancer is the fastest growing disease in Australia, people have died from it - and yet people still lay on the sunbed just to look good in a bikini! Pamela Anderson's tan is at least partly fake, and seeing as she's had breast implants she's probably had botox or something too. That'll save her from wrinkles, but not from skin cancer. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like this, so well done you for not following some crazy fashion!

Well first of all Nicole kidman Looks good for being in her fortys. Pamela well she's an ex drugie alcoholic and she looks good from all the parting she's done. Tanning is good for healing scars and absorbing nutrients for your bones. It also keeps you from getting sick....

TAnning is good for you, Too much of anything is bad... Just like too much of no sun is bad

I like tanning once in a while, but am not obsessed with it.

It makes me look better to have a bit of color on my face
It minimizes the need for makeup, which makes my face break out
It lifts my mood (little shot of UV can be great for depression)
It warms me up on cold, miserable Canadian winter days
It minimizes my chances of burning when exposed to sun skiing or vacationing

i hate tanning, it may look good when in mild portions, but the tanning lines prevent me from wearing a few tops in my wardrobe and it takes forever till it finally fades away. i must admit that i like to feel the sun on my skin but that's what SPF is for, i feel the warmth not the burn.

Tan does NOT = skin damage. Tanning is the body's natural way of preventing damage. Tan = Good, Sunburn is the bad guy. Never ever get sunburn. If tanning would kill you the human race would have died off a long time ago.
