I'm going to assume that you are building your business from scratch. Even if this is not true, these principles can still be applied, just not as easily.
Start with the basics - I'd suggest reading up on Porter's Five Forces:
- Customers: What do they want? What unserved need(s) can you solve? Will they buy your service - are they are aware of it, is it at a reasonable price?
- Suppliers: Who will you need to work with to put your solution(s) together? Who will provide the materials? The labor? Distribute your product(s)?
- Government: Are there any regulations that might impact your offering?
- Competitors: Which companies already are in your space? What are they offering? Why aren't they providing the solution(s) that you propose?
- Industry Dynamics: Is demand growing / shrinking? Are there new entrants coming into the market? Is there one major competitor, or is the market more fragmented?
Once you've answered these questions, you'll have the info that you need to determine your strategy. There are three most common strategies:
- Lowest price: Your solution isn't any different than your competitors' solution, but you offer it at a significantly lower price. This is the leasat defendable, thus least sustainable, strategy. It is a good way to gain market entry, however.
- Highest levels of service: Your solution isn't the newest, nor isn't the lowest price, but your service level provided to customers is the most superior. This takes time to develop but is moderately easy to defend once you do.
- Newest selection of products: Your solution is unique - only you provide it. This is the most defendable, as long as you keep innovating ahead of your competition.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

I have to agree that it depends. But are you talking about marketing your business? If so, the commons ones could be used; however, you really have to reinvent those strategies yourself. Creativity also counts. To be successful, you have to also think of your customers. Do not ever think of building a business and making big bucks at no time. Success also has to do with how you gain relationship with your customers. In this way, you are targeting a long term effect that is very beneficial to keeping your business alive and successful.
Good Luck

From my experience like a manager the most important is to keep your team motivated. Our Human nature is very complex and it is full of external factors that influence our mood and energy.
Being a good manager means to understand that and to know how to make the team to always perform in the best way.
A successful team will cover eachother when one is not in the "good days" and will also help to give a good image of the company and why not a good impact in your community.
All this is named leadership.
You can find great articles in the web site of Franklin Covey.
