I agree that it was Billy Preston for the reasons cited by the answerer "me" above.

Depending on your perspective - I suppose you could make a case for any one of these being a fifth beatle.

Best and Sutcliffe were the 'fourth' beatle. in succession at different times, not a "fifth" person.

Epstein and Martin, though important to the group, were not performers, they were external. Therefore, in my opinion, not a "fifth" beatle.

Clapton would have been intriguing. But his association with the group was limited and tenuous.

BILLY PRESTON has often been called the "fifth" Beatle, and of this list, probably best fits that distinction.

PETE BEST

A virtuoso keyboard player, Preston was the only sideman to ever share label credit with the Beatles and was dubbed the "Fifth Beatle" after contributing soulful piano lines to the Fab Four's landmark White Album and Abbey Road, as well as to such gems as "Get Back" and "Let It Be." Aside from helping to ease the strain developing between the Beatles, he also appeared in the film Let It Be and performed with the moptops during their historic rooftop final concert in London.

Brian Epstein was often called the Fifth Beatle, but I think that should refer to Peter Best, who was drummer before Ringo.

Me! Why do they always forget me?!? I think it's because I'm black (what about Preston and Murphy?)... and because I'm female.
