whenever the thermostat turns on the heat and when the heat turns off, a huge snapping noise is heard across the house. I have n't been able to figure out why. Any help would be appreciated.

It is probably the heating ducts expanding when the furnace fan forces air through them then contracting when the air pressure is removed when the fan turns off. Nothing to worry about.

Thermostats run on a low voltage, there for it would not be createing this problem. Something else is wrong with the system and you need to call a tech. ASAP before you have a short that creats an electrical fire. With a little info as you gave that is the best reply I can come up with.

The noise your hearing is a contact relay used to make the heat work. A replacement will solve that issue. Someone has used the same kind of relay that cuts your outside a/c on to run heat, Many companies used to do that. But it is replaceable.

i agree with spaznsnitz, it is definately a fire hazard, if you hear a snap or pop from the thermostat, (controls the room temp.) they are farily easy to do yourself, or, if you feel daring, you can try cleaning the points on an old mercury switch. replace if any large black, burnt looking areas

mmmm. how old is your thermostat? Is it electronic or an old mercury based kind? You could be developing a short somewhere....best to call and HVAC tech...just to be on the safe side.
