Go to Start Menu ->Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control

Turn all those bars up and make sure none are on mute.

If all else fails you can do this:

Start menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore

You want to restore you computer to an earlier date before it was used by your granddaughter. This option is the best if you do not wish to muck around trying to fix it manually

Good luck

UPDATE:

I would also suggest creating a log-in account for your granddaughter to sign in on that does not have access to anything of importance to you :)

you should check sound properties in the control panel and ensure that all the sound outputs are not set to mute(you can also do this by right clicking at soundman in the systray).try reinstalling your sound card (check your mother board driver cd).
go to win help center ,type troubleshooting and choose sound related problems and proceed further
if that doesņt work get your retailer if you still have warranty.

Your audio hardware may not support new things (DVDs , or computer games) and i suggest that your audio drive has broken down , and may require installing a new one , either this , either she may accidentaly re-configured your Relatek Sound Manager or any thing that has to do with audio ... hope this helps! Bye!!
