my computer is usually pretty fast, but when i play dvd's i notice my cpu usage goes to 98-100% what can i do to drop that percantage to like 50% or somewhere around there? would getting more memory help?

i would suggest upgrading your video card to a better one. Perferable one with it's own processor so the video outputs you play won't use the computers processor. .. and it's always good to add more RAM if you can.

Memory would definitely help reduce transfers between RAM and V-RAM, but decoding a DVD to play on your screen takes CPU power no matter what. That's why there are so many JUNK DVD Players for TV that skip, freeze, and stutter so bad.

Making sure your DVD-ROM/RAM drive has DMA enabled. You can find the setting in device manager under the Primary or Secondary IDE tab. If you can not enable DMA for your DVD drive, try a different connection, or purchase a different drive. DMA will provide the drive with a direct channel to main memory, speeding up access reads.

RAM is always the cheapest option when it comes to improving your performance.

I would not nessicarily be focused on the amount you have but the speed.

Look into what ram suits your comptuer best.

shut down all programs at start up (except virus protection) also anything in your tray (by you clock lower right (windows) that doesnt need to run..

I dont know what kind of computer you have.. you could have a memory issue not enough..
