I have 1x3 slatted floors under my living room carpet. I need to tear the carpet out and need a cheap way of finishing the floor. I don't have a lot of money to work with on this project, any ideas?

The floor is only a sub floor and i'm not sure its condition but I can hear the slats when I vacuum so I know the paddings gone , the people who lived here before completely ruined the carpet so there is no choice but to pull it up.

Don't remove the carpet. Bare floors are so "cold" looking... not cozy at all. And the dust flys around.

rent a floor sander from the local hardware store. They usually only charge 30 something for a 24 hour rental. I would also suggest getting someone to help if you have never done it before. From the way you spelled Improvements, I don't think you know much. I am not trying to be mean only helpful. Find a friend that can help you. Floor sanders can be tricky.

The style of your home would have been nice to know, because if it is Country or Cottage, a painted floor would work perfectly. Combined with stenciling around the perimeter of the living room, would add an elegant look and feel.

assuming the slattes are hard wood, use 100- 180 grit belt sander, or rent a floor sander for large area, (this is hard labor part). (rougher sandpaper for rustic look, finer for smoother floor) remover all dust with a vaccum, then tacky cloth. stain according to manufactures instructions. coat with polyurathane according to manufactures instructions. all items found at lowes. now if the slates are only a sub-floor, you will nead atleast 1/2 inch thick HDPB, and a few carpentry skills, im me for more info
