Timepass.
But there is a chance: you can meet that one person, who likes you... maybe you think so... or you hope...

If I had internet in my house, online friendship would mean a lot to me. But the fact is people online are never serious about anything, I mean, people online feel they are in a sort of fantasy world where anything they say, anything they do won't be meant by them truly in any sense.
That is why online friendship never occurs to me. People here are not real, they pretend to be some-one that they are not. I had internet connection but I gave it up because of this very paethetic condition of the internet. But sometimes I am here again, to help people in Yahoo Answers, that is the only work I do on the net. I gave up chatting a long ago.
Let me demonstrate, when I was 13 people would not chat with me, I say is friendship always leading to one thing? Now I am 18 and I feel all the lying is not my business and I prefer to tell the truth rather chatiing with some 34 year old who is pretending to be 17!

Yes it does mean something to me. I have met many good friends, that I consider closer than some real life friends. These friends have helped me through a lot.. I honestly have less than 5 close friends online that I really talk to much anymore.

Depends.
If the parties are emotionally invested then 'yes' it means something. If the parties can 'leave', or 'take' the other, without so much as a thought, then, it's a time pass.
