It should say on the label what the uses are. Elmer's is a water-based glue, but can be used on wood, some plastics, paper, and some other materials. Clear glue, from my recollection, is mucilage and is primarily meant for paper. What is the brand name?

It is possibly a PVA glue. PVA glue is usually white in appearance. Most PVA glue dries clear. It can be used on a lot of things from sticking paper to bonding wood during carpentry. It is also used for collage and similar work. For this type of work, it is usually thinned. PVA glue is extremely versatile. It can waterproof decorative artwork made of paper and fabric. The fact that it is a water-based glue usually means your brushes and you can be washed with water before the glue dries. If using PVA glue on timber to be stained, make sure you clean the surplus off quickly or the timber where the glue is make not take up the stain. To remove dry PVA glue by sanding can take ages and can ruin the finished shape of the item being built. PVA Glue can bleach clothing. The glue can be washed out of some products (usually those that can be destroyed by water themselves) over time. I have used it for woodwork for years. I am a bit younger than you. If still in doubt, use the glue on something that is not extremely important to you.

Since it's embossed, it is very old. Before 1900 probably. Research it on eBay by typing it in and looking at what people have. You could even ask a seller and sell it for a good price if you want.
