I loved Beverly Cleary. The Ramona series is great, and just about perfect for 8 year olds.

Also Charlie and The Chocolate Factory might be good. I know I enjoyed it as a kid, but I'm not exactly sure how old I was when I read it...

Little House on the Prairie is another fav. series of mine.

Magic Treehouse series, Animorphs (this is an old one but still good)... if the kid's a girl, there's always the Babysitters Club series and the Madison Finn books.

My daughter is nine and she loves:

The Fudge series by Judy Blume
Junie B. Jones's series by Barbara Park

Junie B may be a little more for girls but Fudge is for any child. All great, silly, but very engaging stories!
