If you have rear disk brakes, the rotor and disks are not used for the parking brake. There is a little set of shoes under the rotor that does this. You would have just worn them a bit. It could have possibly gotten the fluid hot, so please have them bled.

If you have rear shoe brakes, then those are used for parking also. I doubt you ruined them, since rear brakes only supply about 20-25% of stopping power. If they were recently changed, I wouldn't worry about it, except for getting them bled.

They may need adjustment, which is supposed to occur when you back up and brake, but you really have to hit them kinda hard for it to work. Find someplace where you can back up and hit the brakes hard about 15 times and see if they feel like they did before.

BTW, if you have an automatic, you really don't need to use the parking brake, except on a hill.

until you have an exceptionally effective and strengthen automobile that heats up the brake in chilly and moist situations, then no. utilising the brakes wears down the brake pads and rotors however the pads might desire to be replace just about each and every 365 days. Rotors in keeping with risk each and every 50,000 mile, word I mentioned in keeping with risk. An previous automobile might placed on from long sessions of not using, yet i'm speaking months. New autos if left sitting shouldn't wreck down, yet I do recommend washing the engine off often. even though in case you force frequently. if basically a week the worst you may do is flatten the tire on one area.

if you think the brakes are going bad on a car it is best to have them checked ASAP. my stepmother for a while kept telling me to start stopping quicker. one day after dropping me off at school she told me she was going to have the brakes checked. car was in the shop twice before she picked me up. first time was expected. second time was because some sort of pin had been put in a locked position on the brakes. after that she picked me up from school and we had a very scary ride on the way back to the shop. we had next to no brake going down a hill. turns out the idiots had not filled the brake fluid up. in one day my car could have been wrecked by many people about 5-6 because of brakes.

Your parking break is your rear breaks. If you managed to drive 10 miles with the parking break on, then the pads were already worn quite a bit, and you probably finished them off. The breaks are not ruined, but the pads need to be replaced.

NO don't drive until you have it checked out if you have brake drums you over heated and warped them probley ruined the wheel bearings from the heat ruined the shoes and all the springs lost there tention have it towed to a mechanic you trust it's going to cost a lot new shoes drums possible bearings and hardwear if you drive it you could lose your breaks and have a wreck.

You didn't ruin the enter braking system, but the burning smell was the pads frying. You will need to get the pads replaced.

running that far with the parking brake on probably heated up the rotors and pads severely and more then likely glazed the rotors and pads and warped the rotors, if the rotors were extremely hot there may be a chance that they heat cracked and that heat can be transferred to the calipers also, causing premature failure of the piston cup o-ring causing it to leak. don't be surprised if you have to replace the rotors, pads and calipers

well you definitely wore the pads down and probably glazed your rotors, to be safe I would put new rotrs and brake pads.
