The fact that sting ray deaths are rare. Also because Steve Irwin was always a survivor of life-threatening incidents with crocodiles, and it's just weird that he died not at the jaws of a croc, but at the sting of a stingray.

Steve Irwin would be greatly missed :(
Does anyone have a fact on how many other people have actually been killed by a stingray? People who didn't get proper treatment doesn't count.
I never ever heard of ppl dying for a stingray. Whats so funny is that all the Sea World out there is scrambling for PR defense now. Lots of them allow you to swim with or touch stingrays.

The odds of this happening are so rare. Usually if a person is stuck by a stingray it will just rip the skin and may cause an infection but since it hit his heart he didn't have a chance. I was so sad because this happened to him. The person who said he was a freak is just a cruel. He had a family that loved him very much and fans that loved him also. He brought happiness to millions~

To die by stingray is relatively unheard of, and Steve being a professional with a pretty good idea with how to deal with such creature, that coupled with the fact that it was a direct strike to the heart, through the rib cage... one has to admit that it is a bit of a freak accident that he would bite it. Ironic though!

well for a couple reasons, 1) usually stingrays dont attack humans, its usually only in defense & I do believe there is only one other case of death by sting ray ans 2) the fact that it hit him in the heart is what killed him not the actual sting or its venom, it punctured his heart...so basically this was a freak accident as in all normal situations this never would have happened

RIP: Steve Irwin, you will be missed

Because to die the way he did was really really bad luck. I think there have only been 5 deaths wordwide by stingrays. Considering all the risky stuff he did, to be killed by a stingray while snorkling is extremely freaky! And very very sad for his family. As crazy & annoying as he was to alot of Aussies, it is a big big loss to us all.

b/c the sting ray BARBED him in the chest and i guess they consider it a freak accident b/c it wasn't by an animal that was something you would expect him to die from....like an alligator, crocodile, or snake!!

I personally think that maybe he was tired, or feeling pressured by the situation to complete the work whereas normally his intuition would've kicked in.

Also --he knew snakes and crocs. Rays he didn't --whole other animal um literally.

So sad.
