Why do people say, "it is what it is"? Of course it is what it is, or else it wouldn't be.
What are they trying to prove?

I don't know, I guess to make some type of point, or to end a conversation. Smart thing to do, really, when you're dealing with somebody who won't shut up..."Well, hey Becky, it is what it is, you know? Well, gotta go..."

I think people say that when it really does no good to question whatever has happened. Kind of like when someone disappoints you, and you have just come to understand that people will occasionally disappoint... the why's and wherefores don't matter, so... it just is what it is.

It could be a little arrogance, or a way of saying that's just the way it is going to be, take it or leave it.
I think it always seem to have a little attitude that goes with it.

For example. If someone says, I hate the way meatloaf looks. It looks so nasty. Then someone else may reply, it is what it is. They're just basically saying accept it, that's just a part of what it is.
