Even with extended forwards it may be too small. Are you planning on long rides or just local stuff. How far you're riding can make the diiference as to its being tolerable or not. Sportsters are usually a stepping stone to a Big Twin. Check for a Harley rental place ,Usually about $100 a day.Try the bike you're thinking about getting and a few others. It's a wise thing to do before spending thosands on a bike.

Sportsters are great bikes. But, to be comfortable AT ALL, you're going to HAVE to have extended forward controls. Even at that, the look of a factory sporty is 'small'. Have you thought of an older Sportster that you can afford to make some changes to ( controls, seat, different tank ) these changes will at least make it LOOK bigger. Another option would be the 'Street Bob' Dyna.....

Try a Electra Glide, Road Glide, Road King, Fat Boy, or a Soft Tail. That will accommodate your size much better. That is since you are looking for a Harley without a fairing.

you'll look like a circus gorilla on a mini-bike, man, go for a real harley like a road king or heritage softail. that new 96 cube injected engine is going to be sweet...they should take the harley name off of the sportster in my opinion.... just my opinion...

I agree with the suggestion of renting a few various models first. If this isn't an option for you. talk to friends or bikers at a biker bar or dealership that are your same size and what they find works for them. Big chat room for bikers on Sturgis.com or hogs4sale.com where others might be in the know on this. Good luck & ride safe regardless!

Thoughts:
Ride what fits you.
That means get what you want, not what your friends want. Are they riding it, or you?
You buy what you like and make it physically fit you or you buy what fits your body and you make it what you like.

Aint nothing wrong with a Sportster. Remember, it's a kind of bike for a style of riding. If you ride different you may want different.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I agree wth your friends. I've seen big men on Sporters and it's not a pretty sight. I'm not a big fan of sporters anyways --- don't like the skinny front tire. Try a Heritage Softail. or a Road King. Much more comfortable and you can add crashbars and highway pegs to extend your legs. :)
