How can you tell if something is leather, or leather-like material?

Trying to sell a used handbag/purse on ebay, but I don't know if it's leather or not.. it really looks and feels like leather but it doesn't really smell leathery

Check the touch and the reverse of the cover, the real leather is soft, the leather-like is rugged.

It's very easy. Leather smells completely different from synthetic fabrics.

Hmmm. It should smell if it is leather. Do you have anything that you know for sure is real leather that you can compare?
