It's a guilt trip tactic used by nutcase conservatives. They try to guilt trip people into believing in their ways. The only problem is is that 57% of America thinks this war is a bunch of crap. That's alot of people in this country who hate America.
Now take a look at this quote below and you will notice it's the same tactic used by conservatives.
Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials
Sound familiar?

Its so easy to say "I support the troops" it sound nice leaves a smile on your face as you say it doesn't it. Not many will ever say they are against our boys in combat, that would be idiotic. But the fact is there are many in powerful leadership positions who are quick to put our soldiers in danger by their comments and actions during this time of war.
"NO CHOICE" they SIGNED in to the most powerful army in the world. If a military has no expectation of future battle whats the point, or are we supposed to poll the soldiers....by a show of hands who's wants to fight today.....hmm okay let me see who's wants to fight tomorrow.....Maybe I'll wait for the next war....

They need to knock you down some how !
It is a part of Republican's PR machine.
For the same reason, that a liberal means homo, or ***-hole in USA. Every where else a liberal means free-thinker
............from Wikipedia ..............................
In 21st Century American politics, there is considerable confusion over the meaning of the term "liberal". Beginning in the early 1990s, the Republican Party has made a concerted effort to change the meaning of the term, be a method called "framing". [3] Instead of arguing against liberal beliefs, "framing" attempts to change the meaning of the word in the public consciousness, so that a belief in equal rights for all Americans is framed as "special rights for homosexuals", a belief in the rights of those accused of crimes is framed as "soft on crime", and a belief in freedom of religion is framed as "hatred of Christians". This has been successful to such an extent that the term "liberal" has become stigmatized and is now generally avoided by those running for office;

Ask the vets returning from Vietnam.
It is because it is easier. If they lump the two together, they can feel comfortable in accusing the anti-war people as unpatriotic, etc.
I'm glad to see that you support the troops in any case.

Because people don't think. I agree with you. I support the troops as well, but I do not support this war. Some Republicans on here want to call you names because they cannot debate with you. The only simple-minded thing to do is call you names...

because we are wariors, and we know the only path to real peace is total victory, and we do have a choice. It is an all voluntary military.. If you oppose the war effort, you are opposed to our effort, what we volunteered for .. If you demean what I do for a living , it is personal, you are attacking me.. That is ok though, I will preserve the peace and the american way of life for us all and you , usless as you are, will gain the benefit along with the rest of us..

Because people still have the image of the anti-war activists in the vietnam era. Vets would get spit on, called baby-killers, some would get blood thrown on them.
I'm glad the current generation is having a better, more balanced approach.

I am right there with you. I am completely against a war in Iraq, however, I feel for the troops for risking their lives for us to put oil in our vehicles. I feel terrible for the families that are losing relatives everyday.

Because it's easier for them to generalize and label, than to actually pay attention to distinctions and deal with the merits of different issues.
It takes less effort, both cognitively and in terms of expression and spin (advertising), to lump everything together. That way, it's an all or nothing model, and you only have to convince people of one small part to get them to buy into everything.
Take that example. If we don't treat all the issues as separate, then all they need to ask is "do you support our troops". Yes. Of course. Why not. Well, says they, that means you mush buy into the entire rest of the package. It's all connected.
Except it isn't really, if people bothered to actually think about it. Sadly, most people don't bother to actually think about it.
