Is your baby comfortable in his carseat/carrier? Too hot or cold? Try putting in a baby cd to play. Does he get to ride in the car often, if not just try to get him used to it. Block the windows with those baby shades, maybe he don't like how fast things are moving.

Either the kid is uncomfortable in the car or does not want to be away from you. HIGHLY doubtful the kiddo is scared of the car. Their long term memory is just beginning to form and they can't remember that far back. My bet is that A) every infant craves comfort and B) you are that comfort. While sweet and dear it's also a pain. Best suggestion - ride next to him in the car for a few days (in the back, someone else drives) and/or sit back there with him with the car off. Gradually move further and further away. As you are gradually moving further and further away decrease your interaction with him, first pay him attn every few seconds, then every minute, then every few minutes. Try that for a few days and see how it works.

My newphew does not like it because of sitting still and thought it was wierd at first. Trying telling the baby about the car and get books about cars, as you know mother is always the best so try to let someone drive and you sit in the back with the baby to calm him down.

You're little is most likely not "afraid" of riding in the car. This a very common phase for kids to go through. My daughter went through it and it was very hard to be stuck in the car with a screaming baby for, at times, up to 45 minutes. At first it broke my heart and then I just wanted it to stop. You can't stay at home but just try to make your baby as comfortable as possible-talk to him, try familiar music (I know, you're tried all this). It will pass.

try putting a mirror so he can see himself. when my 4 month old is having a holy hell screaming fit, i take her in the bathroom and show her the mirror, she doesn't like seeing a crying baby so she stops. everytime her lips curl up to cry she sees that and stops. they sell these mirrors as parent mirrors so you can look in your rearview and see the baby, but just point it down so he can see himself instead. being in the car may be overstimulating by seeing things go by so fast, or he could be like my daughter and just hate having a seatbelt holding him down.
