Why is it that those with the least, have these 'pie in the sky' expectations. That either god will save them or they'll hit the lottery. I happen to qualify as "poor" and do not participate in either. I guess if good old fashioned hard work doesn't get me there, nothing will.

Gambling is easier to explain, because it has the possibility of extremely high financial gain, with a small initial cost. Religion often comes into play because people that have made bad decisions begin to realize their wrongs, and hope a divine power can forgive them and give them another chance.

Some people are so frustrated with thier lives that they want to quickly change their status for which they want to take shortcuts. However it is better to work hard and to intelligently avail opportunities.
Poor people more strongly believe in GOD as fulfillment of many of their wishes is out of their control thus they depend more on GOD to make the task easy for them.
However I feel that old fashioned hardwork should be accompanied by old fashioned belief too. As often how hard work you do it is nullified by any incident.
