Um, that's the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, the TV celebrity and head of Australia Zoo. Crocodile Dundee was a fictional character in two movies, starring Paul Hogan, who is alive and well.
Yes, it's very sad, and quite a tragic (though not entirely unexpected) end to a distinguished career.

It wasn't crocodile dundee it was the crocodile hunter and I found it rather funny really because he got what he deserved from all the stupid stuff he did. The biggest was when he held his infant son while feeding the crocks. I feel bad for his family but it was bound to happen eventually.
