My desktop motherboard has 2 ethernet ports. One which I am using is connected to the internet via router and the second one was never used. I don't want to buy a wireless router. I wanted to know how to set it up for the laptop to be able to use internet via the desktop.

I would really vote on purchasing a router. Configuring dual ethernet ports can be time consuming. You'll have to setup a gateway server, ICS, or use 3rd party proxy software.

Think of it this way.

cable modem sends the data to the 1st port. Your computer will act as a gateway. With the 2nd port, data will be sent to/from the laptop to the computer and forwarded back to the modem.

cable modem has wire to desktop, desktop has wire to laptop.

You should also look into Windows Internet Connection Sharing.
