I let the water start first, so I can put the soap in and it levels out. Especially for powder soap, it always clumps if you put it in after the clothes.

I've been doing laundry for along time and you can do it any way you want...you just have to be prepared for the results that different ways will give you. i.e. if you put the clothes in first and detergent on top, some detergents will leave greasy oily marks on the clothes because most detergents needs water to dilute them in order to prevent this. If you put the soap in first and wait for it to fill up before putting the clothes in it, you will have more water than you actually need, since most machines require clothes to be in them to determine the amount of water needed.
Best bet - put some water in it, add detergent, mix it around a bit and dump the clothes in. Like I should be the one to talk since I am sitting here answering questions on line...but if you wait add half the soap, let it fill and then go back and add the remainder - or - if you wait for the water to fill up and go back and add the clothes, you have way too much time to kill. : )

It really depends on the water, the soap you use, and the clothes. For whites, if using bleach or another whitening agent you want the water first so that all detergents, etc are fully blended. If you use a powdered soap you want the water first so that the soap can disolve and not leave deposits on the clothes. But most people (myself included) just put in the clothes and turn on the water...

How would you get the clothes in the washing machine if it had water in it? Besides, the water level is usually determined by the amount of clothes.
It should be, start water, put in half the amount of detergent, then the clothes, then the rest of the detergent.
I learned to put detergent in bottom and on top a long time ago when washing curtains & only half of them were getting clean.

I choose to put the clothes in first because the washing machine determines the water level based on the amount of clothes put in.

I'm pretty sure its the clothes first if you are doing a machine wash. Mix the soap and water up separately then add it to the wash

If you're using powdered detergent, it's best to put at least some water in first so the soap can dissolve; you avoid soap deposits on the clothes.
But usually it's clothes first, then water in a machine.

You start the water and put the detergent in the running stream of water to make suds.
When it's finished mixing (a few inches high), you add the clothes.
Other wise the detergent gets on one piece of clothing and isn't mixed well.

I put the soap in and then I start the washer, then if I am adding bleach, I do it at that time, let the water fill about half way and then I put the clothes in. Only works in top loaders.
