They already do charge for services via messenger (LaunchCast, Phone Out service etc). I'm sure they are always planning more paid services, however, they will never charge to use the actual messenger service as this is where they get their customer base from.

They've been saying they are going to charge to send emails, like snail mail, for years now. That still hasn't happened, so I'm guessing it is just a rumor about the messenger.
Let's hope so, anyway. :)

That sounds like a rumor, it could have been started by their competitors! If they do charge, everyone will just go to another site that's free, like MSN!
