While my hamster runs on her wheel, she often sticks her head out the side, getting bashed on the head by the cross-bars of the wheel. Does anyone know why she doesn't just run straight?

this would bother me to i hope someone will give advice to help i would ask a pet store..such as pets mart..

they often do this. they r just checking their surroundings. he may hear a noise or is just on the look out for his safety. sounds like u have a metal wheel or maybe plastic but with bars/rungs which is bad for them & can hurt their feet. u need to get a solid one so his feet doesnt fall through. not sure what kind of cage u have but there are ones u can attach or just set inside the cage. below r examples.

The hamster doesn't realize it's going in circles and is trying to figure a way to get off. Either that or he's trying to see what you are typing on the computer.

remove the wheel before your hammy gets more brain damage.
get a Sams cage with external enclosed wheel where your hammy can't do that.

Please tell me you are not using a slatted wheeL! i own 25 hamsters. slatted ( or runged or 'ladder style' wheels) are extreamly dangerous and can break limbs easily. remove it and purchase a smooth plastic wheel ( available fairly cheap at petsmart) as for the head thing. some hamsters are quirky. however i do urge you to get a new wheel asap! please visit my forum for more help! http://www.hamsterhealth.bigbig.com
