I think it's awful...but I also think he must have done SOMETHING to provoke that attack. My husband and I went swimming with stingrays in the Cayman Islands, and they are very friendly, docile animals. Our guide told us that the only time they'll attack is when they feel threatened. Let's face it, as cool as this guy was, he cheated death a LOT of times...and I guess it finally caught up to him.

I remember watching the crocodile hunter when I was younger! Steve had a passion for animals that was obvious.

BUT wasn't it great Steve lived a fufilling life? Some people can live till they are 100 but have not experienced life!

My heart gos out to his young daughter, son and wife!

I think it's sad that he died.... having said that i don't think people should be surprised. He was basically flirting with death every day. There is no kind of special training to ensure that a wild creature will not attack you. I just find it ironic that it was a sting ray, of all things, that killed him and not something more vicious.

I'm very shocked and devastated. He was a very nice person whose life was dedicated in educating people about animals. Its such a shame that he is gone. =( There isn't anyone like him. Steve, you will be greatly missed.

Well it's shocking so to speak. I still see his old shows on TV. Thought a croc or snake, or a wrong step on a cliff would kill him instead. He must've made that stringray so upset that it attacked him.
I wish those who survived him the best.

The best thing about him wasn't the crazy antics and the appalling risks - it was his open, obvious LOVE for the animals and environments with which he worked.

One of God's Gentlemen...

A real shocker. That guy was unique and a genuine animal lover who truly knew his stuff. What a fluke!
